Amazing how sheltered it can be in the tropical forest--raining at La Selva (dry season isn't here yet) but we are dry (except for our feet). And if it is raining in the temperate zone, I would normally say we should stay at home, but here in the tropics, the sun could come out at any moment, and we might then see flying insects we came to look for. Today we are going to check out some sites for potential butterfly observations, including seeing whether butterflies will come to salt solutions ("mud puddling" behavior) and whether skipper butterflies will come to bit of toilet tissue, which resemble white bird droppings. We have a report from other scientists that the initial search is visual, so....
